Well its one thing to not know "get in the van", its another thing to not know henry rollins..... but if you dont' know who black flag is I dont' think you can call yourself a rock fan. Especially not a rock fan from the 1980s. sorry.

So is it your view that it's all right not to like Black Flag as long as you know who Black Flag is? Or must you both know and like Black Flag to call "yourself a rock fan"? My musical tastes are pretty eclectic. But since I dont know Black Flag I fail your test in any case. It was silly of me, but right up to the moment of your post I thought I was a rock fan. But now I know better -- thanks, for straightening me out!

(Ok I'm exaggerating.... but you get the general idea...)
Okay... I have heard of Black Flag. I have heard of Henry Rollins (altho' in connection with his spoken word, not with punk). (Cut me some slack, I was 2 in 1980.)

But who is Jello Biafra? I thought Jello was what Americans called jelly?

He also ran for green party presidency with nader, mainly to draw punk types to the green party not to actually try and run.

Jello Biafra is the closest thing to an idol ive ever had. great guy, amazing band.

Metallica was not SPEED metal, they were thrash metal. Corrosion of conformity or Slayer were speed metal.
Now, I've listened to my fair share of metal and I've never been clear on the difference between speed metal and thrash metal. Once I read a review, saying that some song switched from thrash to speed in the chorus; I listened and all that happened was the drummer started playing twice as fast (the 'every other eighth note' Slayer style). So is that all there is to it? Because if so, Metallica had speed metal songs ("Fight Fire with Fire", "Battery", hell, "Metal Militia").

I want to be a member of the metal cognoscenti, and this distinction is all that's holding me back! (As long as it's not FALSE metal...)

OK, thanks for finally conceding that point. Black Flag belongs in a group of bands that are not recognized by most people.

i.e. Henry Rollins (while influential) is not as famous as you were making him out to be.

I have a feeling that there is no clear consensus on the difference.

Metallica was originally considered a speed metal band. Thrash metal bands were like Anthrax.

Those were the opinions of the metal crowd I hung out with in the 80s. Your mileage may vary.
