How could you get the exact opposite conclusion than what was intended? I was making the claim that if this speaker's assesment is true (i.e. that only 500 to 1000 will be there), then there will be little plublicity. Thus its probably OK for him or her to go because his/her parents won't find out.

Thus I encouraged him/her to go.

There was no hostility either intended nor implied. Not every criticism is hostile.
