In the first post, starling wanted to know the definition of belief. However, it has been pointed out that there is more than one definition for that word, depending on the context. In this instance, the correct definition for belief would be:
confidence in the truth or fallacy of a statement A belief effects actions and thought patterns. I have been to science demonstrations where people have covered their ears and tensed up, waiting for a loud explosion, when only a puff of air was produced. Their belief was proved false. A belief can be true or false; experience will tell which one it is. Belief is important in that it effects people's actions. Everyone believes something. If I posted that 2+2=22 at least one person would try to show the error in my arithmetic. Why? Because that person believes my statement is wrong and another one is correct. -phil |
