Perhaps begging for change and eating your trash may be more genuine living, the true "good life" perhaps.

It wasn't all it was cracked up to be IME.

As a salaried employee, I am obligated to produce as much as I can, performing at my peak levels -- not turn in a specific amount of 'work'. My employer expects me to contribute a full 8 hrs of my thought and efforts and does not have a set 'productivity level'. I generally have exhibited a high level of productivity and I am paid for that high level. If posting on a board cut down that normal high level, I would consider it unacceptable.

My company Internet policy allows for personal use in the same way that telephones can be used for personal calls. Is it ok to make an occasional personal call? Sure! But is it alright to be on the phone talking to a friend all day? No. I wouldn't read a newspaper all day at work, either.

Each person knows when he/she is abusing the freedoms granted at the work place. I suspect you know the answer to your own question: whether it be "yes" or "no".

For me, the location I work at now (at this moment, in fact) disallows ALL personal Internet use, so, although I consider the 10 minute break for a quick browse while a background analysis job is running to be 'ok', it is unethical.

Sometimes if you're working overtime - as it were - to tell yourself it's ok, that's a clue that it isn't really ok...

But realistically, everyone takes breaks during the workday. As you said, people tend to know whether they are abusing the freedoms granted them, or not. At least, if they are honest with themselves...

Someone has to do the dirty work of society.

I just wish Neuroscience could give us the keys to happiness and the sense of well-being. Then perhaps a drug or some sort of surgery could be developed that would end all those problems.

Of course this may be immpossible, and thus life is stuck with suffering.

Samhain,

I face a similiar situation, but with a slightly different perspective. I primarily post to this forum from work, mainly because I don't own a personal computer, and the computers at school are generally taken. I work twelve hour shifts at night on the weekends, which leaves me with quite a bit of time to do whatever I want. The difference is that I'm not restricted in my use (though I suppose if I tried hacking into federal databases or downloading porn, they might feel differently, but that's another thread). I can browse all night, so long as I get what little work that needs done done, and deal with situations as they arise.

I suppose I could find other things to do around here: rearrange cabinets, reformat paperwork and files, things of that nature. But it isn't expected of me, and they certainly don't pay me for it. I would say that, if you are comfortable with it, and your employers aren't concerned with it, I wouldn't give it too much thought.

On second thought, I'd make sure your company isn't really a front for the mob.
