Anquetil and Poulider, Merckx and Zoetemelk, Vansteenbergen and Van Looy

But you have to be Belgian, French or Italian to know what cyclingrivalry is like

In football there's England - Germany off course, always a blast. Most English hooligans arrive by boat in Ostend (where I happen to live) leaving a trail of distruction and puke. It's lovely!

In the NHL (hockey), the Montreal Canadeans/Toronto Maple Leafs rivalry has been standing since the '20s. Mostly its all in good fun, but games between the two are some of the highest ticket sellers all season.

Do people really follow sports? seems pretty silly.

hmm... judging from the sports guys I know the biggest rivalries are probably
Budweiser vs. Heiniken
Natie Light vs. Beast
or Carmen Elektra vs. Pamela Anderson.

In tennis you had the Navratilova/Evert rivalry. Sampras vs Agassi was also a good one - at least when Agassi had his shit together.

That's interesting if it's true. Do you know how far back that extends, because I'm thinking it could be as a result of the (was it) 94 world cup, where South Africa won and then tried to claim the previous two in which they weren't allowed to compete.

I am licking my lips at the prospect of tri-nations this year. I'd love to see the league converts do well. Sailor and Tiqiri (or however it's spelt) have done much better than I expected this season, but I'd love to see Rogers get a real run, because I think he could be a superstar.

The SA/Z rugby thing goes back a long way, early last century even. IIRC it has a bit to do with Maori players going on tours before SA were blacklisted, but has its roots before then. I remember seeing a doco about the rivalry, and there's a lot of passion there.

Well, in the NFL, You have the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears.

In NASCAR (American Stock car racing) you have Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordon.

Nothing compared to the recent rivaliry between the Patriots and The Jets!

Then there is the hateful Pittsburgh v Cleveland as well.

And just for laughs, The Argos and TiCats up in Ontario, eh.
