Well, on the subject of hypotheticals...

Let's suppose that SOMMS meets a guy one day. This guy is pretty smart; smart enough to disproof God. He writes a 300-page proof on why God cannot exist, and then consequently does enough research and study to explain every God-related miracle, effect, and action. Furthermore, he explains how the universe works, where it came from, and the nature of nature. He has solved all the mysteries of the universe, and is pretty much omniscient, and would actually be God except for the fact that he's stuck with his "human form". Eh, nobody's perfect.

But would SOMMS not then believe in the non-existence of God, after listening to this guy?

"Brilliant! There is no limit to how low the skeptical intellect will grovel to protect it's way of life."
Ah, yes, how could I be so ignorant!? I see now!

We should not use the current evidence, knowledge and science of today to determine a rational thought and standing; yet use a book written 2000 years ago by men who still thought the earth was flat and the center of the universe (among other countless absurdities) and the use of outrageous hypothetical questions to back up our standing.

Eek, how could we all be so blind?
[end of sarcasm]

Em, who exactly is 'groveling' here?

What if your left arm and right leg suddendly broke away from you body, flew up in a circle six times, came back down punched and kicked you in the head, and then flew off into the sea never to be seen agian.

Would you believe that the 'Pyro Mime God, who Oversees the use of Cocaine, Meth and the Universe' was the doer of this 'miracle', if I had earlier stated that such an event would happen to unbelievers?

Did your opinion on the 'Pyro Mime God who Oversees the use of Cocaine, Meth and the Universe' change after I asked that hypothetical question?

I didn't think so ......

*shrug*
Heck, what do I know, I'm just a 'skeptical intellect'.....

Finally something we can actually talk about.

What if, in trying to understand what happened, the simplest, most reasonable explanation for this series of events WAS God?

Then...a great miracle occured! The Invisible Pink Unicorn brought my loving father back to life in full form!

You better start believing in the Invisible Pink Unicorn.

If you don't you're an idiot.

Absolutely.

If the Invisible Pink Unicorn showed up at your doorstep in person...told you 'Ima healin yer folks!' then proceeded to the mortuary and
in front of you, your friends and the crowd that gathered brought your parents back to life for all to see...

...you probably SHOULD believe in the Invisible Pink Unicorn.

While attributing a previously unknown phenomenon to God is certainly simple, I daresay it is not reasonable. Why? Because countless other phenomena in history which were once attributed to the supernatural were later shown to have natural explanations. So far, the reverse has not happened.

Uhh...no.

People now are not smarter than people 2000 years ago. We are more technologically advanced, and perhaps generally more educated, but not 'smarter'.

Who decides which explanation is the simplest? Who decides which explanation is the most reasonable?

I'm sure a five year old would have a greater affinity towards the supernatural than to quantum mechanics or multi-variable calculus. Does that mean we toss those subjects aside because they are difficult for some humans to understand?

I'm certain Goddidit is the simplest, most reasonable, and highly convienient explanation for any mystery proposed to a theist who has already convinced himself that God exists.

I'm not interested in situations where Goddidit is the simplest most reasonable answer. Show me an event where God is the only explanation. Then I'll believe.

And now that I've told you the story you are required to believe in the Invisible Pink Unicorn as well. If you don't you're an idiot.

Comments welcomed,

Me: Odd isn't it that every Christian denomination claims to have the Holy Spirit guiding it into all truth, yet they disagree with each other on virtually every point of doctrine. Could it be they're all bluffing?
