Is it possible that lanugo has no function at all, that it's just one of those "ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny" things? Just part of the shared developmental genes we have with other mammals, like how whale embryos have hind limb buds at a certain stage?

Shoot, at least your baby is from a related species. I swear I gave birth to a changeling elf - pointed ears and all.
lol. Mine looked like Yoda, except she was cone-headed.

They always told me "If you have an ugly baby you'll never know it."

They were wrong. I knew it.

Congratulations on new baby boy, Frostymama!

I was told this by a freind from Washington, she saw the photos of my newly borns and remarked that they weren't "cone headed". What do you guys do differently during delivery to make them that shape?

I dunno. They had to use the suction cup on mine. That might be related.

Yes... coneheadedness may result if doctor must use suction cup to try to pull them out. The suction cup latches onto top of baby's head and can cause swelling, hence a cone atop the head.

Oh that probably explains it then, I believe forceps are preferred by UK midwives.
