I think you actually push your focus the other way. Can you at will focus on either something closer or farther away?

The trick is to relax your eyes in just the right way that they main picture goes slightly out of focus. It's really hard to explain, but once you've got the "feel" for it, it's easy.
Perhaps it is the same thing, but how I describe what I do to see those hidden images is "make the image go double until the correct degree of overlap is achieved to make the hidden image pop out."

But do it by defocusing, not by focusing (i.e. crossing your eyes).

No, you're not daft. It's possible you may just be genetically special.

I recently read about some research in the UK that found two women who may be tetrachromats. Instead of seeing three primary colors of light (red, green, and blue), they see a fourth. Most people have photorecpetors that pick up the three primary colors; the researchers think these women have an extra type that lets them see a color between red and green.

I'd buy that idea. The other type of colorblindness that's less common is blue-grey colorblindness. My husband owns a jacket that _he_ calls grey. My mother and I both maintain that it's a greyish shade of green. And when George and I finetune the color setttings for our monitors, I tend to end up with more blue than he does, even on the same piece of hardware.

So there may be more than one type of tetrachromat mutation.
[I admit my printer driver software drives me crazy, because it _never_ matches what I've worked out on the screen...but that's not a result of any color perception mutation. Every artist I've talked to complains about the Epson printer driver.]

D'oh. That explains why I never could see those "stereo" images. I was born cross-eyed. My brain did a considerable amount of rewiring to be able to see anything close to "normal" before I had corrective surgery.

Thank you very much for that info, lugotorix. It makes me feel that what I am talking about might be real though not neccessary the same as these women. I do not see these colours in waking life ever. It is worth noting however that one of my sons is slightly colourblind as are two of my nephews!!!

I haven't talked about this dream to people very often as they have a tendency to dismiss it as imagination though I believe I had similar dreams as a small child.

Unfortunately I rarely remember my dreams anymore

When I defocus, I essentially focus on a point closer to me than the image, but without actually going cross-eyed. Going cross-eyed is, of course, easy.

Croc, can you wisk up some data?

For the pattern you showed and asked us to print, what is the limiting rate (rpm) at which the servo has to spin in order to see the color illusion.

For the next set of measurements, can you half the width of the circular black lines and double the rpm of the servo?

Then can you publish the results.

After this we can speculate some more as to the cause of this illusion...

Nice to be working with you.

Yes I done some homework and I have drawn a blank on this mystery. But I know it did not fool the emulsion on my color film.
Here is one <a href="http://www.sciencenet.org.uk/database/Social/9610/s00205d.html" target="_blank"> speculation </a>
