The...ummm...logic....goes like this: on some level these people believe/know God exists, so they have to exert a lot of effort to keep from admitting this 'obvious truth' to themselves. So this 'constant internal conflict' comes out when they use religious blasphemy. There was also something about "having to curse the name of gawd to convince themselves he doesn't exist," and I'm sure the phrase "Freudian slip" was worked in there somehow, but trying to remember any more makes my head hurt, so I'll stop.
Hmmmm... by that "logic" I must worship sex. The last time I was frightened for my life, I said "Fuck-Fuck-Fuck!" most fervently. Had things worked out differently (it was an extremely close call in traffic), those could well have been my last words...

I think that's one kind of worship I might be able to buy into. And I'll have to remember to try out your response if I'm ever presented with that sort of argument again.

I actually caught myself pulling an Al Bundy and exclaiming "Great Caesar's Ghost!" the other day.

Heh, I reminded myself to do that more often.

Aren't italian males said to be calling for their mothers during orgasm? (The whole "Mammamia!" stereotype). That would freak me out much much more than an atheist calling to gawd ;)

I thought "Mamma Mia" was somehow related to the Virgin Mary (since many Italians come from Catholic homes). It means "Mother Mary" or somesuch, IIRC.
