Many of the greatest rivalries in US sports are at the intercollegiate level:

Duke and Carolina
Ohio State and Michigan
UCLA and USC

etc...

The Lakers and Celtics was one of the great professional sports rivalries, although it hasn't been as intense lately as in the 1960's or '80's.

I'm surprised nobody's said Celtic Vs. Rangers yet.
No football fans here, huh?

Sorry, but the Packers - Bears have been going at it for 86 years. And it is a bitter bitter rivalry. NOTHING compares to it in the NFL. Not Chiefs-Broncos, not Patriots-Jets, not Chiefs-Raiders, not Cowboys-Redskins, not Browns-Steelers, this is a true border war rivalry. It's a rivalry that divides families and children.

The only thing in my mind that comes close in American Sports is Red Sox-Yankees.

The only reason I'd give a nod to Bears v Packers is because of the long history of the rivalry. Not that it's not a great one. But Raiders/Broncos is currently the best in the NFL. Or Raiders/Chiefs. The Bowns/Steelers is a good one though as not only the players but the fans hate each other as well.

Yeah, but the pack is such a bunch of fainting pansies. I mean, they might have been manly men back in the day, (when they actually had homosexuals on the team) but now. . . Not to mention the horrible green and yellow combination of their colors. Pondscum uniform colors. And their decent record last season was a fluke of scheduling and the pansiest conference in the NFL. I should take all this name calling back, the pack gives pansies a bad name.

Most of the rivalries I'd note (Canadiens/Maple Leafs) have already been mentioned.

I will add Ben Johnson-Carl Lewis over 1987 and 1988. You could not find two more distinct personalities, and they genuinely hated each other. The both had their share of wins, there was no lack of stories to tell. And even 15 years later, the two are still trading jabs, thanks to recent accusations against Lewis.

In the world of boxing, Foreman-Ali comes to mind.

The US-Canada women's hockey teams have an absolutely terrific rivalry going. Too bad it's oft-overlooked, save for the Olympics.

What is your criteria for a good rivalry? What in your mind makes the Raiders/Broncos a better rivalry?

I forgot about the Glasgow football rivalry, thanks tensor!

Another, lesser known rivalry is between the Saskatchewan Roughriders, and the Winnipeg Bluebombers. Every year for fifty years, the Labour Day Classic is held here, in Regina. Every year, the two teams compete against each other for nothing more than rivalry. Of course, I find the CFL almost as boring as the NFL.
