I think that many Christians feel atheism is a direct attack on their religion because many atheists [that I have met, I would not include most of you in this generalization] do not chose to express their disbelief of all gods, but only of the Judeo-Christian God.
saut, if only it were that simple. Many times it has gone something like this:

xian: You believe in god, don't you?
starboy: No I don't.
xian: What do you mean you don't believe in god?
starboy: I just don't believe in god.
xian: Well why not. How can you not believe in god?
starboy: I just haven't found any religious teachings convincing. (I am being very polite here and not telling what I really think.)
xian: Oh but don't you want to go to heaven? (or some variant to that effect.)
starboy: I don't believe in heaven.
At this point on only one occasion the person has stopped and just let me be. At that point forward we had an unspoken agreement to never broach the topic again. For all the rest, and it has been a very large number it usually continues like this:
xian: Don't you believe in the bible?
starboy: No I don't.
xian: It is the word of god. or some variant on this theme
starboy:I don't think it is.
xian: What do you mean it is not the word of god? It is the word of god! They are usually very forceful at this point. Most break it off but if they continue it is usually something to the effect
xian: You should go to church! or
You should read book X! or How can you not believe in god! Or one of many other comebacks. Several have followed up over a period of months trying to get me to believe in god. Most annoying.

When I was younger all of this used to leave me with the feeling as if I had done something wrong for not believing in god. Now a days what I find so delicious is that here at IID atheists can be as rude to visiting Christians as they are to us in daily life. Payback is a bitch!

GeoTheo, someday you might understand that the love of jesus is not always welcome. Until that day you will be as annoying as the rest.

I'm sure that, in some instances, the same could be said of we non-theists - eh?
