I joined the private sector with an MS in biochem. I do pretty well from a financial standpoint.

It is more a case of developing marketable skills in certain areas. I work in R&D/Product development, and am pretty happy with what I do.

As a biology major and recent graduate, I have found basically ZERO work available to me. I've been lucky in that I found a job at a scientific company a couple years before I graduated, however, I'm now a Chemist with a Biology degree. Although I make pretty decent money, I found that if I were to do the same job elsewhere, I would only start out at about $11/hour, and have to work swing shifts. This is only doing basic lab work, however, but that is basically what you would need to start out at before moving up through the ranks.

I would honestly suggest to you to major in Biochemistry or Chemical Engineering before choosing Biology as a major, just based on the difficulty I've had looking for other oppurtunities.

I'm interested in getting a job in forensics eventually, or working for the CDC. Although working in forensics pretty much deals with having a science degree and being in the right place at the right time to get trained for the field, getting a job with the CDC at pretty good pay requires at least a Masters in Biology or Biochem, with emphasis on Virology/Immunology/Embryology/Cell Development.
