There may be a factor of entertainment involved as well. You are at gathering of some type. Some fool is spouting his mouth off. It piques interest.

People who think they know everything are extremely annoying to those of us who DO.

Facts be damned, who needs them when they can make instantaneous judgements about what is what. They wont consider other points of views, or even bother to check to see if they have their information correct/complete.

My question is this; why do so many people hang on their every word? I always seem to encounteer groups where the converstations are dominated by one individual who fits the above description. What gets to me is the people who seem to willingly listen to them and take everything they say at face value.

Is it that some people are just too timid to say anything, or that they don't want to form their own opinions about things so they would rather absorb those of people they perceive to be "strong"?
Don't be so sure that so many people are hanging on their every word. Have you spoken with the audience later to find out what they were thinking? On many occasions, I have had conversations with people who seemed to be hanging on every word, but really were thinking that the speaker was obnoxious and full of hot air. And, of course, telling someone that to their face is not considered to be acceptable in some circles, not to mention the fact that such blowhards are often even more obnoxious if anyone dares to question them or contradict them.

Though I do agree that self-righteous people are annoying.
This reminds me of the saying that opinions are like arses; everyone has one. (I have altered the wording to make it less offensive to some.)

I disagree that having many opinions means that they "keep abreast of life and like to stimulate themselves intellectually." There is no need for any of that for people to form opinions about things. Many people have opinions without any sign of intellectual stimulation or any real awareness of what is going on in the world.

I am also reminded of MAS (Male Answer Syndrome). (If anyone reading this does not know what it means, just do a search of the Internet with your favorite search engine.)

May I refer you to the book:

RUSH LIMBAUGH IS A BIG FAT IDIOT by Al Franken

(Point by point refutes Rush's lies.)

My Baby Brother the 60-y.o. retired grandpa listens to Rush Limbaugh (it appears) very frequently if not habitually and says he (BB) really abhors RL's everything. I tried to get an expl from Brother, "Why then do you listen to this schmuck?" (whom indeed I've never heard.) But Bro is reluctant to explain his fascination, and I don't know WHY he's so-much addicted.... Interesting...
