I don't know if she's neutered, but I'll ask next time I go 'round(that's where Cameron lives). She has shown a slight aggressive streak, while I've been there. I personally don't like to see dogs left alone, either- my dog lives inside with me, and he's a happy, well-adjusted, tolerant pooch with no bad habits.

Humping is pretty much strictly a dominance behavior, so yes, it's normal for a female dog to do this.

However, she should not be doing it to humans. The single most important factor with a dog is establishing humans as consistently dominant. If the dog is showing dominance behavior with people, there is a risk that someone's going to get hurt. It sounds possible that the dog is only exhibiting this behavior with children, so you may want to concentrate on that by having a child do some simple, supervised training or something.

Also, as marduck said, the dog shouldn't be outside alone all the time. They need to be socialized consistently, and being left alone for long periods of time can really mess a dog up.

I realize she's not your dog, but if your son's going to be around her, you have an excuse to take an interest in the situation.
I think she gets away with too much(jumping on people, licking all the time, etc.), and hasn't had her dominant behavior corrected. I put this down to inconsistency in her training. In fact, Cameron told me off when I pushed her away from him, when she did it. He thought it was funny, which makes me think this happens on a regular basis.

Another good tool - a bit less drastic - is to put a hand on each of your dog's shoulders. This is a position that alpha males often take with females in their pack (or so I've been told) and it has a calming effect as wel
Funnily enough, she often lays on her back to show her belly, too, but I haven't seen her do this with Cameron, or his mother/grandmother, just me. Of course this doesn't mean that she doesn't.

I'll try the hands-on-shoulders thing, and see if it works with her.

Overall, though, I think it's a combination of lonliness, inconsistent/nonexistent training and the dominance thing- with mine, I established my alpha"hood"(?) early on(when he was about 9-12 weeks, he's well over 5 years now), and like jayh's dog, he puts up with more from kids than adults.

How is the bald spot going? As for humping, any time, I am only a few hours away.

The important thing is to work with it's natural pack instincts (which are the reason dogs are so suitable for living with humans in the first place. A cat comparable in size to a midsize dog would be absolutely too dangerous to keep, because they do not have that elaborate pack structure)

An excellent way to establish dominance (in immediate response to any disturbing incident) is to firmly push the dog flat to the floor (belly down is fine) including holding the chin firmly against the floor. Keep the dog confined in this position till you feel it physically 'relax', essentially it has surrendered to your dominance posture. Because this ties directly to their pack order instincts, they remember it and it's non threatening to them unlike a beating. Straddling the dog while doing this can reinforce the dominance

While she hasn't humped anything, my female toy fox terrier will life her leg and pee if she sees her neutered male chihuahua housemate do it.

The thing that I find amusing is that my chihuahua humps his little love toys ( small stuffed animals ) with a complete erection even though he's been castrated. That is one sexy little dog. He cuddles with them afterwards so he must be the sensitive type.

Another thing I do that I think reinforces my dominance status is that I smooch my doggies on their muzzles a lot. Apparently, I have far superior innate social skills with dogs than I do with humans.

Basically, it's a sort of affectionately dominant gesture to grab a lower-ranked dog by its muzzle. I didn't realize this until somewhat recently. I was just doing it because I like it, but it would seem to enforce the dominance thing, I'd think. And dogs love getting kisses, too.

THE GENTLE ART OF DOG SEDUCTION
You move in in a relatively similar fashion as you might with a person, actually. Just rub their heads and play with their ears, look into their eyes (another dominance gesture), make some sweet talk, and when the time is right, you start in with the smooching. Blang-O! Next thing you know, their butts are wiggling out of control and they're flat on their backs, begging for more.

(Yeah, I'm smoove.)

My dog doesn't try to hump anything, for some reason. And he's completely intact. He seems to feel the need to mark everything outside, though...

Actually, I do this quite a bit with my (not so)widdle pooch. Well, not kisses, but I do rub noses with him at times, and gently grab his snout and ears. He seems to love it.

BTW, it takes FA to get my dog's arse wiggling furiously(I know, I'm leaving myself open to smart-arse comments...but it's true ).

Another thing is, I use the tone of my voice and ignorance(is that the right word, considering I only pretend to ignore them) to communicate my mood/intentions/commands or whatever else to dogs. It has always seemed to work- even with other's dogs. I haven't done much of this with the bitch in question but I will from now on.

I have actually done this with mine. Well, not holding his chin to the floor, but pushing him onto onto his back. I did a similar thing while house-training him- when I caught him in the act(and only in the act- not after the fact) of peeing inside, I would flip him over onto his back, so if he continued peeing, he'd get himself. I think I only did this 2-3 times.

Hee hee. Me too Luna. Of course in my case the leash is more of an accessory to the leather bondage halter...
