When I was in high school, I decided that I wanted to make the world a better place. And I asked myself, what is 'better?' How can I recognize what is 'better' or 'worse'
The result was a 12-year study of moral philosophy. I found reason to reject all accounts of intrinsic value (whether it be the intrinsic value of life, or of truth, or of maximizing pleasure and minimizing pain) because I could find no sensible account of what these value-properties are made of. I found reason to reject all popular forms of individual and cultural subjectivism -- which ultimately reduce to 'do whatever you like and think you can get away with.' What I ended up being a bit complex, and I wish I could explain it to you in a short amount of time. You may want to see the ongoing discussion on objective/subjective morality to get a hint. |
