When I was at summer field camp back in ’81, I collected a sample of what I thought was a fairly believable example of raindrop impressions. It is from the Eocene Green River Formation from one of the many outcrops in Price River canyon, central Utah. That was 22 years ago. I just walked over to my lab and found the sample. I can’t believe I found something that easily – but I did!

I believe that raindrops can be preserved when you have hard rain falling on a subaerial mud flat. When the mud dries out the chance for raindrop impression and mud cracks to be preserved is pretty good.

I’ll try to take a pic and post it tomorrow.
