Hey amie,
hows it going. to the op, I voted other to see results. I think that theists might come here for the same reason that I go in the political forum here, to bring knowledge to the masses. I do wonder about the point though. For me in the pd, I can engage people with logic the common currency round here and thus can hope to change people's minds. But I wonder what's the point for theists becuase they cant deal in that common currency. At least not in eog or grd. |

I avoided answering that part of the question because I didn't want to start a sand storm the likes of which have not been seen since the one I just saw on TV in the Iraqi desert! Right now I don't think I would change my beliefs. I have searched them out and come to some pretty firm conclusions. I don't think the pillars my faith is built on will crumble by being exposed to people who are not of the Christian faith. That said, I would not advise a person who is weak in their faith to visit here. You all would probably do a pretty good job of deconverting them! Kevin |

I believe we've deconverted at least two people who seemed to be very strong in their faiths initially - Tricia and rainbow walking. And thanks for the compliment. |

I don't know that I would advise anyone to come here for any other reason than that there appears to be a much higher density of interesting people here than on some other boards.
My definition of interesting, of course! But then, I don't come here for religious reasons, but for social ones really. So I would recommend it for social reasons and not religious. --tibac |

I originally came here because I was doubting the Bible, and I wanted backup for my doubts. I came to see that there are lots of good reasons to doubt, in addition to the reasons I already had. I felt validated being here. It was nice to talk to other like minded people.
It still is. Now I'm here to get further backup. I find it very fascinating how many ways there are to show that the Bible is not really the word of God, even though most of America believes it is. They seem to believe in it without good reason. They never look at the reasons NOT to beleive it. Now I want to look at those reasons, and be able to explain exactly how and why the Bible could not possibly be God's word. I am here to further the realistic view of the world. I want to express my own reasoning, and bring some sense into the world. Maybe I can even de-convert some doubting Christians. This website did help officially de-convert me. This website also allows me to look at other ways of thinking, and understand other people. For example, I can see the ways that Christians defend their beliefs. Understanding their apologetics helps me to further explain how their beliefs don't make sense. Also, I can see how other atheists / agnostics see things. I can see why the atheists don't believe in a God. But I do. I'm a Deist, but I'm not totally set on the idea. I'm exploring, learning, expressing, and just having fun. This is one great website. |

I suppose I should try to answer this...
I voted other. When I first came here I was partly [mentally] ill; I'm not entirely sure what all my reasoning was. I'm not sure I'd tell anyone if I was sure. Now I've been here plenty long enough to have found that (imo I should say - thinking of my recent comments on the MD board about how our evaluations of others are subjective ) there are many neat people here and I find the discussions interesting. Would I ever change my mind about my own beliefs? I don't know I can tell you that I understand the ways nontheists view life much better than I ever did before coming here. I'm not saying I fully understand them - simply that I know I understand them much better than I used to! Helen |
