I can't believe there wasn't more deaths.</strong>

Actually there have been. If they are going to include the Apollo 1 fire which was a rehearsal that was on the ground, then they should include other people who have been killed by space rockets. I have already mentioned that the Soviets had many fatalities from exploding rocket that was meant to take cosmonauts around the Moon.

There have been a number of fatal accidents involving rocket equipment, etc. that are almost never included as space fatalities, but are still the result of the program.

If we are to include just astronauts/cosmonauts killed on an actual space mission, then the list linked to is complete assuming there are no Soviet fatalities from completely covered-up missions. (And the Apollo 1 astronauts need to be removed from the list. And for heaven's sake the brain tumor guy needs to be removed as well.)

Of course the reason why these were not covered up was simple: it was impossible to do so. Like the case of the three who died on the return to the Earth because of loss of air and they were not wearing spacesuits. The Soviets when back to two-man capsules for years after that one.

They did cover up an explosion of a rocket that was being prepared to send a man around the Moon. They were rushing to beat Apollo 8. It blew up largely because of the rushing killing a lot of people on the ground. This was never admitted until Glasnos (spelling?).</strong>
That rocket was the N-1, and yes, officially the Soviet moon program never existed. After the Americans landed on the moon all the other N-1 rockets were destroyed.
