I was getting sick of the latest hypnotic weight loss miracle commercial, "Because you're extremely obese, YOU neeeeeed highly expensive and powerful Leptoprin" so I decided to look it up and find out why, if its so strong and expensive, it doesn't require a prescription and what's in it. The commercial tries really hard to make it sound like something never offered before. I'm not overweight but am interested in marketing hoaxes or the type of substances one can buy without a prescription in this country.
I found the most expensive crap ever being bottled as a miricle drug in the history of weight loss ads. Each two-capsule serving of Anorex contains 989 mg of a proprietary blend known as Leptoprin. It contains 20 mg of ephedrine alkaloids from the ephedra plant, 34 mg of caffeine from kola nut seeds, 324 mg of aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid), 0.15 mg of iodine from kelp, plus unspecified amounts of green tea extract, L-tyrosine and cayenne. Recommended Dosage The manufacturer recommends taking two capsules with a glass full of water no more than three times per day. ECA, Cayenne pepper, L-Tyrosine and Kelp!!!!! Hardly anything new or breakthrough. The research on ECA, (ephedrine, caffeine and aspirin) has been around for over 10 years. They do work better than nothing or seperately but research shows the optimal mix is 10 to 1 on the ratio of caffeine to ephedrine and slightly more aspirin. These guys only seem to have a 1 to 1.5 ratio. Cayenne, L-Tyrosine and Kelp to boot? Can't say it won't get you spazzed up but how much would it cost to make your own from buying each common ingredient separately? Each two pills have 20mg of ephedrine, 34 mg caffeine and 324 mg aspirin. I can buy a bottle of 500 (325mg) aspirin for about $3.49. That's enough for 5 bottles (or months) of leptoprin. A bottle of 100 25mg ephedrine pills is 4.99 at my corner gas station. That's just a little more ephedrine than the bottle of leptoprin. 34 mg of caffeine- drink a 1/3-cup of Folgers. About $.10 cents. As for L-tyrosine, cayenne, kelp and green tea -very cheap at drug/grocery stores but research shows their weight loss properties are weak or diuretic at best. So for about $10-15 bucks/mo. you can have the same stuff (or a little more) you get out of the bottle costing $100-$150. Just can't understand that industry...or the same crappy weight loss short cuts they keep recycling on desperate overweight people for more and more money. AS USUAL, FOOLS AND THEIR MONEY... (if this is the wrong forum for this feel free to move it) |

I'm still aghast that they called it Anorex... I know, it's from a latin (?) root, but it sounds like they're target marketing folks with anorexia. Ewww.

I agree- the name Anorex was one of the weird things that kept dragging my attention to this so called new "miracle drug".
Another site that sells Anorex said it actually had 324 mg caffeine per two pills -that sounds more correct- so I should change the daily caffeine intake above to 3 cups black coffee 3x's day or 1.5 Vivarin 3 x's a day. jeez. |
