Talking Battlefield: 1942

This game is my new addiction.

I noticed some discussion of it in the Halflife 2 thread, so I'm making this one.

I think this is the coolest FPS I've ever seen (though hoenstly, I've never had the chance to play the great ones online and only recently got a system where I could, BF:1942 is the only game I have played on a nice system).

You have stationary emplacements, vehicles, planes, boats, multiple classes, strategy, teamwork, leading bullets, missions not fragfests...just loads of awesome features. I love flying planes, I love dogfights, I love sniping, I love destroying veritable armies of troops with a single well-used tank, I love sneaking behind a tank and destroying it with a single bazooka shot, I love stealthily trying to capture bases, I love laying ExpPacks and waiting for my hapless prey...I just love all the aspects of this game. I recently downloaded Desert Combat as well, and it seems kinda cool but I didn't really get to test it.

Any thoughts/opinions/game discussion?

I'd love to do all the things you're talking about but all I can do is play against stupid bots where there's no enemy "mindset" or human pattern you can exploit.

There are zero servers in South Africa and without broadband.... lets just say 798 is a good ping time. Just convinced a friend with ADSL to buy the game so maybe he can host locally for us and then we'll see whats what.

My personal addiction right now is Morrowind. Its only single player but I've never immersed myself in such an open and asthetically [i]beautiful[i] RPG world. A friend of mine is working on a mod to allow players to affect each other's worlds but I've been sworn to secrecy until its finished. Pity there are no MMORPGs this good looking on the net yet.

haha today I had not internet and tried some single player campaign mode. I set the AI to "Impossible" but it still blows at everything except aiming. The AI can aim across a map with a machien gun on a moving target, but sit in front of them when they have a BAR 1918 and they will often let you snipe them while standing ten feet away. A tank is after you, but hasn't shot you with the perfect aim yet? Just hide behind a rock, and the tank will sort of forget you exist. Sometimes they run right past you. It was fun anyway, trying to be Axis on Tobruk, 5 vs. 20 or so and my teammate bots don't do anything...Very challenging, trying to get behind enemy lines but ultimately I failed, as eventually I would get surrounded and the teammate bots stop going to the main base to get tanks as soon as a bunker has been captured.

I feel for you if that's all you're stuck with.

[OFF TOPIC]Clarify this statment. You see, I've been watching the morrowind modding comminity for quite some time, and now my game is hardly recognizable as morrowind. There are different faces, clothing, sounds, and buildings. I have to eat and sleep. If I run alot, I get tired, can't see after a while, and pant. I have an airship that I assembled, and I fly it around. There is theme music for imperial cities and towns(My personal mod(not released)), and people are of different shapes and sizes(also mine, but damn hard to isolate because of the way I molded it into all the others).

I started all this because I wanted to see if it was possible to make morrowind Multiplayer in some way. Over the year I have been at The Offical Forums, the most often posted topic is about multiplayer mods, which the most prolific modders and the developers have said are not possible. However, I have seen the emergence of hoods, ships, rideable mounts, cloaks, and new spells, all of which had similar amounts of doubt. Now, if your friend has a serious chance of getting this done, I will be incredibly impressed, as will the entire modding community.[/OFF TOPIC]

Well, B1942 is a great game. The airplane physics are pretty good, and it was tough for me to get used to them due to a lifetime of arcade flying. I don't have it, although I should, but I did play it for a short time at the house of one of my friends. I had alot of fun just playing by myself with the Yak, but that's just me, I guess.

Battlefield 1942 is the absolute mutt's nuts as a multiplayer (LAN for preferance) but as a single player I find it falls a bit short.
As an aside I have a question:
Is there actualy a submarine in the game, and if so where the hell is it?

Submarine's are on a few water maps, namely Midway and Guadalcanal. Apparenly there is one in Tubrok as well, in the lake, but I've never actually seen it nor have I looked for it either.

Yes the game is excellent, lately I've been playing the desert combat mod though. One game online last night was pretty nice, I was owning in the T-70 tank, taking pot shots at helli's (typically death for a tank) and shooting them out of the sky. Ended up with a score of 28-7 or something similar, felt good to dominate for once, instead of the typical mediocre-good score I usually get.

I love BF:1942

look for [AGB]Rainman in a game. I'll be that sneaky engineer laying expacks on your tank.

Favorite tactic: drop an expack somewhere where traffic flows, but has grass or bushes to limit low level range of sight.

Work in the area (cap flag, repair stuff, mine brifges, whatever) and watch the expack. When something happens on it, blow it.

I especially like to drop them in areas I know the snipers like to roost, as I pass by. Randomly set them off as I take out other objects, I often see a sniper added to the kill list.

Are you supposed to swim to them, or what??

Plus, I've never been able to load Guadalcanal. Is this a bug? Is it because it's the largest map that came with the game?

I've downloaded the patch, but that didn't help. Will Road to Rome give me a full upgrade? Why am I not asking this on an EAGames board?

You can spawn on them. Look for a ship with a single spawn point on Midway. Subs only appear in online multiplayer as well IIRC.

That sucks. Try removing the game completely using add/remove in the control panel and doing a fresh install. BTW El Alamain is by far the largest (and probably best) map. Such an awesome map in Desert Combat, with Hind's and Apache's flying overhead with blackhawks dropping people off. Su 25's, Migs, F-16's and A-10's flying around as well, all the while T-70's, Abrambs, MLRS and Howizer's are going at it on the ground.
