I think this is a PCI card. Very likely this is a Pentium system if it has a PCI bus.
I think there were some ISA and VLB Fast Ethernet cards, so it could be a 486.

But even if it is a Pentium machine it is basically useless.

This card is discontinued, I don't know when. The last modification date on the release notes is 1997, however. I would guess this machine is at least 5 years old. Probably a paperweight.

To learn more, though, I would boot it and watch the numbers that come up. Note the processor, processor speed and memory.

I would expect the performance of Office XP to be terrible on it even if it could be made to run.

Sorry about the n00b question, but does the presence of the card mean that this computer could be used to connect to the Internet?

Indirectly, yes.
The Ethernet card can be used to connect to a local are network (LAN), i.e. a collection of computers in the building connected to a hub or switch.
If the other computers on the network have access to the internet this computer should as well.
