If you will check http://www.baptistboard.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=000222 again you will note that at least 3 of us terrible theists chastized those who seemed to be gloating over the death of Dr. Gould.

And you are to be commended for displaying what is really no more than common decency. It's truly a pity that not all (on both sides) can always be so thoughtful.

Thanks!

This is exactly what is bothering me! We call it common decency, but, unfortunately, in my experience it is not all that common. In fact the good manners and common decency that everyone had back when I was growning up in the 40s and 50s seems to have gone out of style. Our new, bold, honest, and "in-your-face" social practice is not, in my opinion, an improvement.

And I thank you for chastizing them. It is the gloating that bothers me.

It just seemed in bad taste to me. I can't see how this is right to say such things right now. If Billy Graham dies (and at this point I doubt if he may ever die), I could expect something like this in the atheist sites, but not from our side. Anyone else care to correct me on this? I might be missing something, I will admit I may not be seeing something here and it has me worried now.
Wow, post-it, you really don't expect much from us atheists, do you?

I'm trying to imagine all the gloating and back-slapping that's going to be happening here on the II Forum when Billy Graham dies......nope! I just can't imagine any atheists posting something like, "Ha-ha, I guess ole B.G. is an atheist now! Ha-ha!"

Some fundies had also gloated when Carl Sagan died, claiming that he was no longer an atheist.

And I think it is interesting that three of my favorite people, Isaac Asimov, Carl Sagan, and Stephen Jay Gould, were Jewish agnostics/atheists raised in New York City.

Well I do know that if Pat Robertson dies, many many atheists will be in mourning. What else are we going to watch for entertainment?

No, the baptist board does not expect much from us atheists. I guess we are sub-human to them. sigh . . .

Interestingly enough, when news of Rush Limbaugh's deafness surfaced (a much less harsh condition that death, you must agree. Especially as atheists don't believe death = eternal torture), the vast majority of the liberal/atheists responed with "I hate to see anyone, even Rush Limbaugh, go deaf".

There were few gloaters.

I didn't realize that Limbaugh had gone deaf, and it's too bad that he did. I would have rejoiced a little had he gone mute, though.

Actually he hasn't gone deaf. Recent scientific advances allowed a surgical procedure that restored his hearing. Now if they could just find something that could restore his ability to think.
