A tiny snippet: About three days went by and finally along came God. There was two of 'em. There was a big god and a little god. They didn't know me from a ... fromma. But they pushed and they pulled and they tugged and twisted and they yanked and they gave me every possible assistance in the world and finally got me on my way. |

I think prayer is one of the most wonderful things one can do for another unless the dear person in question needs food, water, medical treatment, money, education, security, freedom, etc. In that case, providing them with whatever you can of those might be seen by them as a more wonderful thing. I can't, for example, see the good in sitting by a cholera victim's bed and saying, "Lord, please help this person" as they slowly died of dehydration. Prayer is also a less than wonderful thing if you are praying something like, "Lord, please make this person a Christian in any way you can. Even if you have to give them a high degree of suffering in order to do it." Then it becomes an insulting thing, especially if you inform the dear subject of your prayer what you are doing. |
