I can imagine a conservative atheist, but the Republican party itself is far too anti-atheist.

They are anit-gay as well but there are the Log Cabin Republicans.

A friend of mine is a Bible-reading, Republican lesbian. Go figure.

To tell the truth, the republican atheists were probably more about the "free market economy" and all that jazz (which were also supported by the libertarians). The "moral" aspect of the Republican party could be somewhat difficult to swallow, as far as the atheists are concerned.

It seems that there are much more atheists who are also politically independent, however. The percentage of atheist independents are quite overwhelming compared to believers of other religions.

I don't know if he's an atheist, but my playwriting collaborator works with a gay black Republican. If he were an atheist to boot, that'd be rich.

Talking

I always hear "we'd be worse off with Gore" but I have never heard someone explain why they felt this. Not saying you don't have reasons to, but a whole lot of people jsut say it because that's what the media propaganda machine has decided they should think. "Gore? But he's wooden! And he wouldn't have the guts to face the terrorist threat!" talk about unfounded assertions, but that's all you hear.

I'd agree with this assessment as far as it describes my own particular views.
I'm an atheist and I believe in free-markets inasmuch as I believe they are the economic manifestation of a free society. However I could never bring myself to vote Republican because I believe the party to be corrupted by religious agendas of enforcing morality through legislation. In my view, legislating morality is as much a threat to freedom as socializing the economy.
For what it's worth I generally vote Libertarian, their platform is much friendlier to those who are economically conservative yet not god-fearing.

I do too, now. Although I registered as a Democrat mainly so I can vote in the primaries, and cause in NY, Libertarian wasn't a choice to register. I had considered myself Republican (registered in '88), voted for both Bush-es, but I was never a party-line voter. I want the best candidate for the job, I don't care what he/she is.

Yeah, we would be worse off with Gore--if "we" is the rich!

The biggest problem I see with Gore is that the Republicans would be doing everything they could to undermine him and that wouldn't be the best thing to have happen with the terrorists being a problem.

In general I like opposing parties in Washington, they act to moderate each other. However, when there is truly something that needs doing (as opposed to simply staying out of trouble) then mixed parties tend to cause problems because the Republicans are more interested in power than making things work.
