It does sound like a case of major insecurity for someone to treat your atheism as a personal attack.
I have shared my recent transformation from Christianity to agnosticism with two of my Christian friends. Both are highly intellegent and have what I would consider analytical minds. When I bring up the specific reasons I de-converted, they readily agree that my points have merit. However, they are both married to fundy wives and both have small children. Even though I believe each to have doubts about their faith, both guys are content to walk the party line so as to not upset their family life. |

I think there are a variety of reasons, but one of the main ones is insecurity. You are telling someone that you don't believe in something that they actually, deep down inside may feel foolish for believing. I think people believe in things and then feel foolish for it all the time. I've known people who read the horoscope everyday, follow it's advice, etc. When asked if they actually believe in it, they laugh nervously and say "no, of course not, I just think they're funny." Then when you leave the room they call off of work the next day because the horoscope predicts a bad day for 1/12 of the human population...
Then there are some theists that use their religion to define themselves; define who they are. Disbelief in what they use to give themselves meaning as humans may seem like quite an insult. And then there are some that just *know* they are right, and have to tell everyone else how to live because they're better than you. |

But seriously,I don't understand the Darwin fish business myself. If it was up to me I'd combat the Jesus fish by turning it 90 degrees clockwise bringing it back to it's original meaning. I don't know anything about This website but it was the first thing to pop up with a visual explanation of the symbol. |

no biff, i'd say it had more to do with political power than Christianity.
