Can you show me where this 'fact' came from? Not saying it is or isn't, just wanting to know your reasons for calling this a 'fact?'

If it is true, I'm wondering what the test was to determine they were ignorant?

Well, let's disect it.

It is well established that the predominant lifestyle in ancient israel was pastoral. They herded, among other things, goats.

"GOAT HERDERS" - check

The Jewish religion originated in a time period which is referred to as the Bronze Age.

"BRONZE AGE" - check

The population, being pastoral in nature, was highly illiterate and uneducated compared to many of the civilizations of the time (think China, Egypt).

use of capitalization combined with use of selected words in a message that you KNOW I dont agree with. Unless you lack basic social skills, and/or have an IQ of 10, you should realize this. Or maybe you are just bitter with life since it has no meaning to you.

Many questions thought to be profound in days gone by, have later been realized to be the wrong question altogether, or found to be nonsensical in light of new insights.

In the days when people thought the Earth was at the center of the universe, it was a reasonable question to ask "What keeps the Sun and the Moon from falling down to the ground?" Nowadays, we realize that is a nonsensical question. It is the Earth and Moon that are falling towards the Sun, and the Sun is falling towards the center of the galaxy.

Likewise, the question of "first cause" is now seen as nonsensical in the light of quantum mechanics and the Big Bang. When the cosmos came into existence, it was already 10 to the -43 second old. There is no "going back farther in time" than that. The question of first cause has not been answered, rather it has been "unasked."
