American Agnostic

I am having difficulty identifying the Republican Moderates on the Judicial Nominating Committee. Orrin Hatch? (Said facetiously)

If a man with the stated beliefs (and history) of an Ashcroft can get the Attorney General position, nothing would surprise me. If 99 Senators rush to sign the "under God" Resolution, and affirm that "In God We Trust," those Anericans who do not subscribe to the narrow and intolerant Protestant fundamentalist world view better start worrying a good deal more than they have demonstrated up till now...and that includes those so-called Republican moderates lest you forget about the Democratic conservatives like Liebermann who is helping the Bush administration to push the "Faith Based Initiatives."

Here are a few URLs that you might find useful for deeper research.

It is a fearsome prospect, the next two years, but we have to wait and watch. Bush blunders so many things, perhaps he will this as well. And all the chrstian pandering doesn't convince me that christian ideals are the prime motivating factor in many republicans voting.

If Bush only weighed christian stuff, stem cell research would have been totally squashed, instead of only partially.

Republicans follow money more than jesus. Can anyone think how to make separation of church and state profitable for republicans?

Here's one line already in use.

Creationists make poor scientists (in the fields of biotechnology, medicine, and the like). To the degree that we promote creationism, we handicap our nation in the development and production of biotechnology.

Actually, Orrin Hatch is the leading candidate being considered to replace Reinquist as Chief Justice, according to analysts.

About what exactly, if you don't mind us interrupting and asking for specifics?

I can only marvel that 2 years after Janet Reno leaves office, atheists declare the end of freedom as we know it. This thread is so long on hypebole and short on facts, it should win a prize of some sort. Statements like "it's all over, blah blah blah," are just reactionary, mindless nonsense passed off as rational thinking.

Personally I worry about the Pasadena cops more than Ashcroft, because I can find actual facts to point to.

Nope. Senator Diaper is supposedly one of the leading contenders for Chief Justice.

Doesn't the person who's been on the supreme bench longest ususally get rubber-stamped to be Chief Justice?

On senority, it would go to Stevens (a liberal Ford appointee)... until he retires or dies (he is the oldest too), when it would go to O'Connor, then to *gulp* Scalia. And none of the justices has indicated an intent to retire, either.

For those keeping score, the breakdown right now is 3 strong liberals (Stevens, Soutter and Ginsburg); 3 strong conservatives (Rhenquist, Scalia, and Thomas) and 3 swing voters (Kennedy, O'Connor and Bryer).
