Angry Cell Communications in Iraq

Well, the war may have turned guerrilla and be a bit messier than expected, but the business aspect of the New American Century's global creep is doing okay, so far.

I've not looked at other aspects of infrastructure yet, but cell communications are looking good for American companies.

Rules drawn up for mobile phone licences in Iraq by the US authorities in Iraq could bar many of Europe's biggest telecoms companies - and almost all those in the Middle East - from bidding.

While all neighbouring countries work on the GSM standard which is used by 70% of mobile subscribers worldwide, there has been pressure from the US to favour the cdmaOne standard invented by US company QualComm.
...........

Almost all Iraq's trading partners, with the exception of the US, use GSM, and cross-network roaming - whether domestic or international - is both technologically difficult and very expensive.

Not to minimize anything that has happened there, but it certainly is within character for the US to also inflict our sorry excuse for a mobile phone system on Iraq as well.

What I've read in the local Sunday rag is that there's an existing GSM network in Iraq with a fair number of users so switching technologies will not only make life difficult for Iraqis in terms of network roaming, but inevitably roll back development that's already happening.

In other words, it isn't "what's best for the Iraqi people".

Just further evidence of what a great big stinking pile of doggy doo the Bush Administration's altruistic claims are.
