The original version of "The Haunting" is finally being made available on DVD in August. I don't know if it's widescreen or not, but regardless, this is, in my opinion, the best horror film I've ever seen. One of the few truly flawless movies.

Well... I probably won't buy 50 copies. But I just pre-ordered one.
This is FAR superior to the incredibly non-scary remake. Thanks for the heads-up! |

You're very welcome. I can't wait until August now. (I'll finally be able to sell my laserdisc...)

The only reason I voted option 2 instead of 1 was that it had "micro-give-a-shits" instead of "patootie"

Good, I will get this movie when it comes out. I've heard a lot about it and with your seal of approval it becomes "must have".
![]() PS I finally got to watch Red Dragon and it was no way near as good as Man Hunter which if you'll remember I got to see by chance only because you had recomended it. Far superior movie. PPS Got any other tips??? ![]() |

It can never stand up to the novel, which is truly a masterwork. But yeah, I'm interested, and yeah, the 1998 remake was a pile of overproduced monkey feces that Jan De Bont will be held accountable for in Hell.

That's one of my favorite scary movies ever...so hell yeah! Pre-ordering my copy at the start of the month. Thanks for the heads up.
The updated version with Catherine Zeta-Jones was an offense to cinema and all who love it. |

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with the 1963 version. Wise did a truly excellent job of capturing the "look and feel" of Jackson's novel, though of course, he couldn't include everything. One thing that might impress you was that even though almost all the movies of the time were being made in color, Wise deliberately opted to shoot this one in black & white. The result is a much creepier, much more claustrophic film. Since you love the book, I'm pretty confident you'll love the original film. BTW, have you ever read Jackson's comedic novels, "Life Among the Savages" and "Raising Demons"? For a woman who could scare you to death, she was an awfully funny writer when she chose to be. Jeff |
