Frankly I don't think there is anything we can do to prevent Theist hostility except convert or die.
They are taught to hate us from their days in the cradle. I remember antipathy towards Atheists being taught to me as a child by the Good Sisters. I've watch Billy Graham on TV drone on about the evils of Atheism and Atheists themselves. Respected Billy Graham the advisor of presidents. Had he used the words Jew or Black or Gay instead of Atheist they would have been marching in the streets. There's even a dictionary on my shelf that gives as one definition for the word atheist, "wicked."

Perhaps we should follow the example of the Blacks, Jews and Gays and not cave in to prejudice, as seems to be suggested in this thread, but to stand up proudly for our rights.

You are right. There is much predudice against atheists in this nation. I think we should have more activists. Not to spread atheism, but to spread the message of tolerance. I think that if we tried to spread atheism, we would be perceived as a great threat, an even larger threat than we are thought of now.

My family sees my atheism as a threat. I have been told that I am angry at god and have threatened my family and god with atheism. I've threatend my family with atheism???? I have seen many preachers and televangelists speak of the evil atheist. We are seen as the criminals, even though most of the criminals are theists. Go figure. If more decent atheists would come forward and claim their true beliefs, perhaps that stigma would have to be removed. You see, I am contrary to the steriotype. I am forcing people's beliefs of atheism to be challenged, therefore, I am a threat to Christians around me.

If you dont belong to a tennis club and have no interest in tennis, you would not be called atennis would you? We should replace 'atheist' with 'normal' or 'default'. I havnt read all the thread so maybe the idea has been voiced already, will read it now.

Good point. Unfortunately in this country the 'default' is to be religious and those that are not are treated as a threat to the 'club'.
