Hmmm. Interesting discussion....and all this time I thought Mkole Mbembe meant "Merry Christmas" in Hawaiian.

If they found a living dinosaur population they would crow and crow about it, although really would it be any different than the continued survival of, say, the coelacanth or the shark, which have not changed much (not in obvious ways, anyway) since the time of the dinosaurs?

In other words, whatever "problem" living dinosaurs would raise for evolution, has already been raised by other "old" or "low-tech" species that survive. So instead of hunting dinos perhaps they should just crow about the coelacanth. Oh wait, they already do that.

Still, if they really did find an apatosaurus in the Congo, the sheer coolness of that discovery would make it worthwhile, even if it would also precipitate endless creationist cries of victory.

I can't believe anyone would spend perfectly good money looking for live dinosaurs with the sole aim to disprove evolution! (Sounds like a vacation tax write off to me...)

But as some others pointed out, crocodiles & sharks have been around for millions of years & I want to add to that list horseshoe crabs--which have been around for around 250 million years, give or take an eon...

QueenofSwords: [With Morning Comes Mistfall]… Runner-up for the Nebula Award, 1973.
OT, but I can’t resist a plug for one of my favorite writers… George R. R. Martin is IMHO one of the great unknown short story writers in any genre. The stories have a lyrical, counterculture quality full of the bittersweet despair of the late 60’s and early 70’s, (as opposed to the more biting and nihilistic cyberpunk despair of Gibson and Sterling). If you like Tom Wolfe, Hunter Thompson, and the Grateful Dead, you’ll like Martin.

Only science fiction people tend to recognize the name George R. R. Martin, and far too few of those. This Tower of Ashes (1976) is my favorite short story in any genre from any century.

It already is a lawsuit.

This place is a Hovind/Creation Science Evangelism place next to Pensacola Christian College(more KJV-onlys than Bob Jones, though most of us couldn't tell the difference.)

Quote:
Short summary of events in the battle between our ministry and the county: On March 29, 2000 I, Kent E Hovind, was peacefully obeying the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, the Creator and Owner of the earth, by conducting the various aspects of our ministry when Escambia County building inspector Rene Pelotte and an assistant came onto our church property, in their official capacity, without invitation and in direct violation of our clearly posted "notice."
I can picture his hand-scrawled sign saying "keep out unbelievers", kind of like the sign there would be at Landover Baptist, if it were real.

When I saw it was in Pensacola, I thought of Kent. Had to be. Was.

LOL Have you ever noticed that creationists rely on other mythologies, as long as they don't contradict the Bible? LOL

Hovind must have some kind of mental illness (persecution complex?) that forces him to wage personal vendettas. He claims the judge is out to get him by forcing him to permit a building in which members of public will be spending time. The nerve of that judge!

Second, his insistence on naming Renee Pelotte as the root cause of all this is nonsensical, largely because she is not a building inspector. She is a code enforcement officer. Her job is to deliver citations based on the reports of the actual buliding inspectors. I honestly think the man is nuts.

Geez, now the creationists have to go and give cryptozoology a bad name? For a long time when I was a kid, ever since I read On the Track of Unknown Animals by Bernard Heuvelmans, I wanted to be a cryptozoologist and head off to Africa and Asia to find dinosaurs and pterodactyls and Yetis. Then I became more skeptical, alas.... I still secretly hope to pick up the paper some morning and see "BIGFOOT CAPTURED!" on the front page.

I think he's getting a bit more widely recognized with those really long fantasy novels he's writing now. He stopped publishing much of anything in the '80s. I agree that "This Tower of Ashes" is a really fine story. I also love "And Seven Times Never Kill Man," "The Way of Cross and Dragon," "A Song for Lya," the aforementioned "With Morning Comes Mistfall," and other stories I'm forgetting at the moment.

He has at least been pretty well-honored within sf, with several Hugos and Nebulas.
