I once saw a picture taken at some hippie commune in CA (Marin County), some of the kids were born with little tails and the parents choose to leave it on because it was all natural and whatnot.
Most people just have them snippped off at birth.

Some of these tails can be consciously coiled, so I wouldn't say they're useless. Sure, they can't pick up food, but neither can that of dogs or cats.

They are used for balance to help us climb trees. Did you never climb trees as a kid and felt that you belonged up there?

This probably happens in western countries too, it is just that they will surgically remove them at infancy before they develop.

It will be a bit cruel sending a little kid to school with this tail still attached so he can be ridiculed, when it can be removed with a simple operation.
