AMD Athlon chips make a damn fine space heater. So much so that I have to keep the windows open during winter for my home office to be a comfortable temperature. Now that it is summer, I had to move my home office to the basement. Before I did this, the basement was typically 10 degrees cooler than the rest of the house. Now that the AMD has been down here for a week or so, it's actually a little bit warmer down here than in the rest of the house. But that beats the 15-20 degree difference I used to have to endure.

This is with a 1.8 GHz Athlon processor. I also have a 2 GHz Pentium IV which has a thermal output about an order of magnitude less than the Athlon.

Knowing this, I will never again buy an AMD chip.

Well there's a deal at Wal-Mart (I know, I know) that I'm considering. It's a hewlett packard, 30gig hd, dvd/cdrw, 15" screen, ethernet and modem, 2 gigahertz athlon, 256 ram, 64 shared video ram. The only thing that bothers me is the shared video. Is that common on laptops? I don't currently run anything that would require more than 192 ram (or 64 for that matter), so it didn't seem like a big deal.

It also comes bundled with a flatbed scanner/printer. Price is $1000. Whadya think?

I don't think that mathematica has a version for mac. I'm a math major, so it comes in handy.

I run my X86 software with Virtual PC, an emulator of Windows XP Pro. When run at fullscreen it "turns the ibook into an X86 Wintel machine." It's slow as a turtle though.

There is lots of software, shareware, etc to Warez/Pirate on Gnutella Protocol, just do a search for .dmg, .bin, or .sit. I did not tell you this though, your actions are your own, not mine.
