Here's the Straight Dope's take on this:
<a href="http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/mgiantsons.html" target="_blank">In the Bible, who were the "giant Sons of God?"</a>

I recall hearing a crackpot creationist theory about this on TLC a while back. Apparently, in the days before the flood there was a canopy above the earth, and this caused humans to live much longer lives. It also explains why certain creatures like dinosaurs grew so big, while living things today are much smaller. According to this theory, giants were merely humans who had grown to huge sizes due to very different conditions on earth than what is present today.

And who said creationism isn't science?

I've heard 2 separate explanations on who the "Sons of God" were....The first explanation is that the Sons of God were in fact fallen angels...The other theory that I have heard is that the "Sons of God" were simply the men of Israel who found women in other cultures fair and took them as wives against "The Lord's" will. They were not supposed to marry out of the tribes of Israel.
The first explanation, although somewhat more popular, presents critical difficulties for orthodox Christian theology. If half-breeds like this where to exist, what would their status be in regard to original sin? According to Paul, original sin is transmitted though Adam to his descendants and it has been usually taught that this is through the "seed" of man. Because of the difficulty in understanding what species these half-breeds would be and their status in re: to original sin, the Catholic Church has opted for a version of the second of these positions, even though the text itself seems to suggest the first. The second position presents difficulties in that there was no Israel at the time this was said to have happened. The alternative then is to suggest that the Sons of God were Shemites (Semites). This reading also presents difficulties in that the Sons of God reference is not used elsewhere, IIRC, to refer to them.
