Default Shouldn't Iraqi companies be getting these contracts?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/2884701.stm

And isn't it a bit soon to be giving out contracts before we've even given them their "Freedom"?

Not if you have to pay back the people who helped put you in power.

US engineering firm Kellogg Brown & Root - part of Halliburton, the company once headed by US vice-president Dick Cheney - earlier picked up a contract to put out oil well fires and repair oil facilities.

That assumes that there's an Iraqi company that's capable of carrying out such jobs. Given that much of Iraqi industry is state owned, maybe we should be asking Saddam for a bid?

Or how about the people who were doing it before we arrived? According to the regional expert speaking about the port last week it was joint run by Iraq and Kuwait so I doubt if the Kuwaiti's will be too pleased about a foreign company running it!

(i.e the border runs straight through the middle of the port, the dock on one side were Iraqi and on the other Kuwaiti, the channel management was joint run)

Default the real meaning of freedom

For Bush and Co., "freedom" means "we own everything, but we will be glad to let you buy it at an exorbitant price."

"Democracy" means "a government of our, not your, choosing."

Anyone in Iraq in a position to bid on such a contract is at a minimum a supporter of Saddam.

Of course, the oil-wells won't be handled this way. They belong to the Iraqi people, that's what our president said.

I second the "name that Iraqi company that lost the contract" motion. Last I checked, there was a war in Iraq and we were fighting the Iraqi government who uses civilians to fight and sabotage. Anyone remember?
