Cusses seemed to turn you on to generalizing and blatant assumption. You have an option to not read and reply to this topic, ain't it? |

I personally was not offended. I have three teenagers at home, and have learned to pick my battles. In this case, I am sure the thread title is not appropriate for GRD. Quote:

So I promise to stick around until you convince me I'm wrong, or until you concede or fade away. I realize you were just ranting, and I sympathize - but I think grd is not the proper place for a rant, and I'm sure the title is not appropriate here. |

I guess RatBac and anyone else who is "offended" by "coarse language" thinks that BAD WORDS float around in the air.
When a BAD WORD is seen, read, or heard, that that BAD WORD goes "CLONK" against the user's head and injures him. As Frank Zappa said, "some people think that cusswords float around and INJURE people that hear them." IMHO, RatBac is using a red herring of being horrified and offended. Passive-aggressive move. I don't care if the top of his head is blown off by his reading BAD WORDS. It's not physically harming anyone. BTW, I do NOT listen to rap and other such streams of dirty words. I consider them to be offensive because of the lack of content and hugely unnecessary use of cuss words. However, a cuss word for emphasis is not my idea of an insult. The kids in my daughter's private Montessori school cussed, because they heard their parents cuss, and their parents were rich upper class yuppies. My daughter started using cuss words as a result. She had no idea what they meant. When she started using them, I laughed and explained to her they weren't nice to use around most people, especially at the age of five. |

But sometimes I am offended by bad words - due to the context mostly, and not the words themselves. Quote:

So, all right, I said. How you talk on your own time is your business. But many people - especially the older folks - can be highly offended, so don't use such language in public, unless your intention is to offend people. All my kids know how to cuss like, well, like teenagers. But they know how to turn it off. I think that's a good thing. |

I don't "insult" someone as a fucking creationist fanboy for fun. He disregards beliefs of non-christians and I find that generally degrading. Say you ask someone why abortion is evil and that person replies; "Because it is an abomination to the eyes of Allah". Don't you find that disrespectful? Quote:

Creationists are fucking idiots, and evolution needs no help from me. And rant threads are fun - I've made a few myself. Wasn't that just a bit distracting - and detracting? You're assuming that I insulted that creationist for the fun of it. I assure you, no. Quote:

Corgan, though it may get rough and tumble more than it should, GRD is still an upper forum and as such is not the appropriate venue for venting even the most righteous of rage.
Given that, I have several options, I can remove the fucking from the title and leave the thread here. I can remove the fucking from the title and move the thread to E/C. I can leave the fucking in the title and move the thread to E, where it will doubtless become little more than a collection of vents. Since the thread has gone off topic a little bit over the issue of the title (which is one of the reasons such inflammatory titles are bad ideas in upper fora), I will keep the thread here in GRD. I (and I suspect Corgan joins me in this sentiment) would like to see it return to the issues raised in the OP. If it does so, I will move it to E/C. Thank you, livius drusus Moderator - GRD |

I stated my opinion in a manner to draw attention to my point - sorry for the confusion. Anyway, carry on. I'll drop it, unless I need to defend my position. |

If he wanted to call somebody a "fucking creationist" then that is rage as we have discussed.
Besides, I think any words can be used to describe idiotic fundies of any religion, due to their extreme lack of comprehension of scientific ideas. Truth is a defense to slander, legally. I don't believe in saying "shit" and "fuck" all the time, like a lot of people do. That does show a poverty of imagination and expression. But the occasional intensifier doesn't bother me. That was my point. I did not say all profanity was OK or not OK. In certain places it's ok and in other places it is not OK. I can see why the mods think it is inappropriate. |
