Default Modem / internet problems...

Every so often, I notice that my Internet access crawls to a halt. When I double click the little connection icon in the system tray, it opens a little message box that tells me how long I've been connected, and how many bytes I've received and sent.

When the Internet is slow, it seems to be because my PC is busy uploading loads of information and the downloading has crawled to a halt. Sometimes I notice that the "received" figure is bigger than the "sent" figure and that the "sent" figure is going up about ten times faster than the "received" figure. After it's sent 1-2Mb or so, it usually stops and normal internet usage resumes.

But it's very annoying and disrupting as I'm only using a 56k dial-up connection, and I don't want large amounts of data being sent and slowing down my web browsing. Is there any way of stopping it or finding out why I'm uploading information, or where it's going?

Actually, I've just thought of something...

Can filesharing progs like Kazaa and WinMX work in the background uploading files without you specifically starting them yourself?

They sure can. I can't think of any file sharing programs that have an option for you to instigate an upload only. There are settings in Kazaa and WinMX that tell the program how many people you will allow to download from you at once, set it to zero.

You may also have a spyware issue.

Download ad aware. Should detect any and all known spyware.

Okay, I've figured it out.

About two minutes after I post the OP, it happened again and I opened Kazaa. Sure enough, someone was uploading something off me.

Okay, I'll check the settings and see what I can do.

Cheers,

I always have Kazaa on in the back ground, and some one is almost alway downloading something from me (I have someone downloading Fritz Lang's Metropolis from me at about 30.24kb/s at this very moment) . But I have DSL so it doesn't really disrupt my browsing.

Often times if you don't share files with Kazaa people wont let you down load from them. I would suggest that you share at least some images or something and limit the number of simultaneous uploads to 1. That shouldn't disrupt browsing.

I can second that. If someone starts downloading from me, I check what they have shared.
If they have no shared files, I disconnect them, and sent them a message to share or go away.

If I get any grief, or they don't accept messages, their IP goes in my hosts.deny tables.

No Soup for You!
