*Schizoid: People with schizoid personality disorder avoid relationships and do not show much emotion. They genuinely prefer to be alone and do not secretly wish for popularity. They tend to seek jobs that require little social contact. Their social skills are often weak and they do not show a need for attention or acceptance. They are perceived as humorless and distant and often are termed "loners."

Well, I've always been independent by nature, and I've never seen that as a problem. Even as a child, I'd often spend all day off by myself, hunting frogs or something. I've always gotten along well with others, but I've never felt that I need to have other people around.

I'm not shy [I'm a teacher, after all]; I've simply never really felt the need of others' presence in order to be content. I'd rather spend a day wandering alone in the woods or engrossed in a good book than with almost anyone I know. On the other hand, I thoroughly enjoy good conversation with intelligent, thoughtful persons.

I generally prefer to work alone because I can almost always work more quickly and efficiently on my own than in a group.

My desire to be "popular" is so miniscule as to defy detection by the most powerful instruments available to modern science.

"Calm" and "unflappable" are two of the most common words people use to describe me, but I've never been accused of being either humourless or lacking in empathy.

Actually, like Ab_Normal, I have occasionally wondered if I might have a very mild form of Asperger Syndrome. Supposed symptoms include:
  • Difficulty in developing age-appropriate peer relationships.
(I've always felt more comfortable with people who're considerably older than myself. Interestingly, as I've gotten older, I find myself getting along with children as well as or better than most people my own age.)
  • Preoccupation with a particular subject to the exclusion of all others.
    (Occasionally.)
  • Socially and emotionally inappropriate responses.
(Sort of. In social situations, I sometimes have to remind myself to smile, etc., so people won't think I'm bored with or dismissive of them. If I go to watch a movie alone, I might think it's uproariously funny, but I won't crack a smile.)
  • Strong sense of honesty, justice, and fairness.
    (Unquestionably.)
  • A desire to be helpful and accomodating.
    (Absolutely.)
  • Creativity in several areas of interest.
(I like to think so, anyway.)
  • Uncompromising principles.
    (Yes.)
  • High personal standards.
(Absolutely. No one else is anywhere near as ruthless a critic of me as I am.)
  • Good organization skills.
    (Yep.)

Hmm.

Cheers,

Michael

I'm sure that there are all sorts of websites about Asperger. I thought about it because there was an article about it in today's Seattle Times.

The article lists some resources, including:

By the way, I wouldn't put much faith in an online personality test. The either/or nature of the questions makes the test just-about worthless, in my opinion.

Besides, if the ability to function independently and a strong committment to such concepts as honesty, fairness, and justice makes me "abnormal," then I have no desire whatsoever to be normal.

Cheers,

Michael

Hmm, a fascinating read. My mother, myself, and my oldest two brothers possess a remarkable number of those traits...

All of us:
have difficulty forming friendships with others our age
have difficulty with appropriate social reactions
have difficulty reading emotions on others (this one, moreso my mom and brothers than I)
As for narrow interest/repetitive routines,
we're all very obsessive - that is to say, we'll start a particular activity and keep at it for several hours, forgetting to be hungry, and when my brothers were younger, forgetting to use the restroom.
My family had a very diverse silverware collection, and all of us had specific forks and spoons we'd eat with, and we WOULD NOT eat with any others..
And we're all clumsy.
