Well, I choose to be a Snare Drummer in a pipe band, but little did I know that 90% of a drummer's time is spent waiting for the piper's to tune up, which is not very pleasing to the human ear.

Sorry Kilted, but that reminds me:
Q: What do you call someone who hangs around with musicians? A: A drummer. http://www.cse.ogi.edu/Drum/jokes.html |

A trumpeter. *shrug My wind ensemble conductor foisted that on us one day. We made sure his eardrums were ringing by the end of Purgatorio. ![]() |

Oh well. All we really need are trumpets and euphoniums anyway. ![]() |

After six years of piano lessons (which I don't regret now) my parents made me take organ lessons at the Southern Baptist Church we attended. The only thing I liked about it was when I was allowed to used the organ for practice. Alone in the church sanctuary, I'd set the stops to sound like a circus calliope and play at it at a loud volume. I often left the stops set that way, made for some interesting organ preludes before Sunday services. Wheee! It was great being a rebellious teen.
Ironically, I was taking those organ lessons from a young man about four or five years my senior, the pastor's son, that, we learned some 20 years later, was gay and died of HIV infection. Tragic. He was such a nice person and a friend to me, a somewhat troubled teenage boy. Never had one inkling that he was gay until many years later. Sorry to diverge off topic, subject brought back some memories. Warren is OK, really. |

Don't you know the song that starts out "Seventy-six trombones led the big parade..." How could you have a band without trombones? Inconceivable. Warren, slide trombone player from way back |

I played the trumpet for three years, right up until the last day of Grade 8, when my band teacher called me into his office and asked me not to take band next year.
(I really sucked.) |

![]() Given, bad trumpet players drive me nuts in any serious rehearsal/performance, but it's great fun just jamming with bad musicians. ![]() |

I had sort of the opposite problem; I begged my mom for violin lessons since I was about 7, but she said no. So I picked up flute at 11 or so, and then after I graduated HS, a friend who went in the army gave me his old violin for free. $40 later and I had a wonderful knockaround instrument.
Hm. Maybe that's not entirely truthful. I play more along hte lines of fiddle. |
