Colitis is a general term referring to inflammation of the large intestine. It has many causes, including food intolerance, food allergy, infection with bacteria, viruses, or parasites, and irritation from things like swallowed hair. Acute colitis in cats in usually self-limiting. If it persists for more than 5 days or so, more thorough diagnostic testing is appropriate.
The veterinarians apparent insensitivity is inexcusable and is reason enough to get a vet you like. On the other hand, I wouldnt necessarily fault the management at this point. Checking the kittys temperature would probably not have changed the initial treatment (antibiotics for presumptive infection) and you mentioned the cat was already quite stressed as it was. Is he still drinking a lot of water? If so, I would get that checked. Kidney disease and diabetes are pretty common in cats and can cause this. |
