I don't like sportbikes. I don't like the forward riding posture they force on you. I prefer the more upright "standard" street bikes like the Kawasaki ZR-7 and the Zephyr, GPZ and KZ bikes before it. I don't think Yamaha or Suzuki has made a bike like that in over a decade. They're all cruisers, sports and dirts. Maybe the SV650 counts as a standard bike.

I might like to get a early KZ1000 one day and restore it. That's a hot bike.

Well, the naked SV would be considered standard I suppose. Most people seem to consider the SVS a sportbike since it has slightly different gearing and a lower seating position, as well as clip-on handlebars. They're basically the same bike, though.

Hi Kelly,

FWIW, I saw mention on the Brit Iron email list tonight that there are a couple of 1949/50 Vincent Rapide motors with magnetos for sale in Australia for AUS$15-18000 (US$7.5-9K).

cheers,
Michael

Sorry, I had to look up what model I remembered. This was back around 1998 or abouts. A lot of my friends rode Harleys.

Anyway, the one he had was a 1340 Dyna Glide Sport. It when fast enough for me. I had my one bike for a while until I burnt out the engine. I had a Suzuki 750GL, it was cruiser but pretty fast. I was riding along side a friend with a FL model and we opened our bikes up on the highway. I left him behind aroung 120 mph but he also had a passenger. I toppped out around 130 but it was hard to see the speedo.

A day later I started getting this knock in the 750's head. The head had run low on oil. It was a known problem but not under warranty. (there was a fix long ago)

Actually, I think the cruisingest current Guzzi model was recently noted for being significantly better performing in the handling stakes than its cruiser competition.

But if people want to ride cruisers that's fine with me, as long as they don't slow me up with one of their "we're mean, we're cool, we're waay slow" groups on the road.

cheers,
Michael
I never really had a problem with people that rode other types of bikes, some of my friends did though. I just never needed to go that fast that quickly. I really like some of the Harleys for cruising because it wasn't the thrill of riding but the comfort of the trip. Sure Harleys are the end-all-be-all of cruisers and certainly not the best performers. But with a Harley it's not really about performance.

KB, the bike I pictured above is considered, by many, a standard. That's the Yamaha FZ1 (Fazer in Europe). The engine is a detuned R1 engine, and the seating position is more upright than a true sportbike. It has a handlebar instead of clipons. The Suzuki Bandit is similar, Kawasaki's ZRX, and the ZR-7 (that you mentioned) also fall in that category, and Honda has the 919. Yes the SV650 (not the S version) is also in the same class, and Suzuki is coming out with a SV1000 (styling like the SV650, with the motor from the TL1000 V-Twin) later this year.

Ouch! The same thing happened to me on my very first bike, a 1978 Honda CB750 SS, apparently prone to speed wobble. I wasn't doing a wheelie, just passing a tractor-trailer at about 90 mph. I distinctly remember flying over the handlebars and seeing that I was doing about 70 when I finally lost it altogether.

The truck driver stopped behind me and said it looked like something out of a movie, tumbling head over heels for yards. I have only a small scar on my right elbow and right ankle to remember it by. Although I do seem to be left with some joint problems as well.

Damn. I can't see the movie--I'm at work--but that sounds decidely double plus unfun. Nonetheless, I love my CBR600F2. It's a hell of a lot of fun, and far more interesting than driving my little sedan...

Standard and nekkie is the best!

When I want to ride I want both speed and endurance. Who needs a butt buster?!

Comfort is over-rated. Real riders should be able to endure long periods of riding even if the bike is less comfortable than others.
