Angry Movie Release Dates

What is the deal with having different release dates on films? I was all prepped to start a thread discussing Basic
(which was only released here about a week ago) only to find out that it is going to hit dvd's in month stateside.
Conversely, there have been a couple of films that have been available on video here before they've been released in cinema over there.
Sure, the major pics get a global release, but why can't that be the standard for the rest of them?
It really is annoying.

Actually, I think nearly all of the Hollywood pics open in the States first. It's in our tax code that we get to see bad movies first.
