It's student-moving-out season here, which means that unwanted consumer goods are frequently just left on front lawns for the first passerby to scavange.
The other day, I went by such a lawn and scored a box of books. I kept about half (Dick, Shakespeare, Joyce, some poetry) and listed the rest on Amazon or sold them to my boss. All told I should net ten dollars or so (which doesn't sound like much but considering that the initial investment was a big fat nothing...) plus my new reading material. My partner got an old and ugly but working turntable. And the season is young, yet - final exams aren't even over. the_villainess (has the scavenging instincts of the noble coyote.) |

I inherited a drafting table supposedly worth $1000+ for free. It was left behind in the house by my ex-roommate's sister. She initially offered it to me for 50 bucks, I said no thanks, so she gave it to me for free! I figure if I'd held out a little longer, she might have ended up paying me to take it.

Just recently moved into a new flat. The last tenant had to leave in quite a hurry, and left some stuff. The woman who's renting the place out said we could keep anything he left.
He left a TV, a Walkman, a huge casette collection (only half of which is any good, but hey, can't complain...) and a PC. The PC's monitor isn't working, but hey! Free computer if I can find someone remotely knowledgeable to tinker around with its insides. I thought she meant he left a couple of spoons, or something. This was a nice discovery ![]() |

Recently a local big men's clothing store was having a going out of business sale. I got about $500 worth of good quality clothing for about $70. Whoo-hoo!

Well, I was in one of those outlet malls, following the wife through the Gap, when I came across some nice shirts that I thought I could use for work. Nice short-sleeve button-downs, marked down to $4.99 and $6.99 respectively (they were on a clearance rack - end of summer, trying to get rid of old stock I assume). As if that weren't good enough, when the girl rang them up, the price came out at $2.77 each!
I got a full version (CD only, though) off Office 97 (yes, this was before 2000 came out) for a mere $37 through an online auction site! Oh, if you live in the southeastern US, and are looking for some nice furniture, there are some nice factory stores in Hickory, NC. We got our armoire there, a knock-off of some name piece (which normally runs around $2500) for $1400, w/ free delivery to SC! They brought it right in the house and set it up for us (just two guys to get it in off the truck, and it weighs about 350lbs)! |

I just last week scored a $469 over-the-counter microwave for $134. It was:
Open box. Scuffed. Mismarked. 10% off open-box items day. w00t. |

heh, this started last year, but still a great deal. I got a rent controlled apartment just 50 or so feet from the ocean in a fantastic area (I'm paying a minimum of 3 hundred dollars less then anyone in the same area for the same amount of sq ft). woo-hoo. Did a lot of searching for this apartment and all my friends are imensly jealous. I will probably stay here untill I have saved enough money to buy a house. I already have several friends who want my apartment when I move out. I love it here.
