Anson,

You may be interested to know there is a whole thread of "Atheist Testimonials" in Secular Life and Support. It's at the top of the list.

Yeah, I just noticed.

Oh, well I've had fun reading these ones. That other thread is just overwhelming.

Some time ago, I actually did a thread about post-IIDB exposure deconversions. We've had more than a few. Many were already leaning that way, and II helped give the final push over to the dark side

I am sure that exposure to a sharp dose of reality represented by the Internet is instrumental in a lot of deconversions, certainly mine.

The squalid little pro-christian sites probably do as much as the out-and-out honest II sites.

I fell in love.

The girl managed to kick Jesus right out of that special high place in my heart that all the Baptist folks said he needed to be in, and to save my life I couldn't put him back in. In the end, I gave up, because it was a stupid rule anyway.

Here's the short answer to both questions. It didn't make sense and I was tired of the "we can't understand the wisdom of god excuse."

Mine was heavily gradual. I think I slipped into 7 years of deism/agnosticism before I became atheist.

I think the seed of doubt was innocent enough: I thought church was boring and I had to either rationalize or confront why I "had to go".

But now, I say the reasoning is that it's folly to believe in anything without evidence. You don't assume a positive by default. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Well, at some point when I was growing up I just thought the whole Christian concept of God was silly. After that I had my own concept of God, but slowly I began to reason away that belief. It actually wasn't until I was surfing the internet before I realized that there were other people who didn't believe in God, and I finally admitted to myself that I did not believe either. The internet was a good motivation for me to finally be honest with myself about what I believe.
