Red face I must be terminally un-hip...

I have to ask. It's driving me nuts. I hear it EVERYWHERE and have absolutely no idea what it means. TV, radio, people talking on the street... I was out dancing at a club last week, the DJ that night was mostly hip-hop, and I kept hearing it and decided I MUST FIND OUT.

WTF is "bling bling"?!?!?!?!?!??!!?!?

To the best of my limited inner-city music knowledge, "bling bling" is the sound that seventeen pounds of gold jewelry makes when rap singers swerve to avoid potholes at 23 mph in their pimp Escalades.

Or something.

For real or are you guys just jerking my chain?

Y'know it just occurred to me that I could have googled this instead of coming here to display my ignorance.... oh well! Maybe I'll try it now and see what I can come up with...

Edited to add: Nope, that just confused me more....

Its basically having lots of flashy jewelry. I believe the bling bling comes from the bright reflections you are apt to see on said jewelry. It might also refer to things other than jewelry that are shiny, such as wheels and chrome on a car.

Hey DD!!!

Well it all makes sense now. For some reason I find it annoying though. Especially when people like newscasters pick it up... it makes them seem even dorkier.

(psst... Donnie... break 25! C'mon I know you can do it! )

It is an irritating term, but then there's nothing stupider than the trappings of financial success as portrayed in rap videos - twenty-wheel stretch limos, solid gold houses, mink swimming pools, sportswear made from Italian marble, platinum women with diamonds for teeth, whatever.
