OK so Shakespeare and DaVinci are potentials.

Penn & Teller hate drugs and alcohol almost as much as they hate religion and John Edwards. Also, Gene Simmons of Kiss is a tea-totaller.

David Hume was a normal guy, apart from a little breakdown in his early 20s (and I don't mean Electric Boogaloo).

Awesome people, doubtful if they fit the genius label.

Once again, not really in the "eternal genius" category.

But it is interesting to think about those who don't reach the eternal genius level but were undeniably creative nonetheless.

Kurt Cobain, Janice Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Belushi, Andy Warhol, Oliver Stone, Jackson Pollack, Samuel Taylor Coleridge. . .

Many of these people could get you high if you got transfused blood they donated.

-Andrei Rublev is a potential candidate. Not a lot is known about his personal life but he was an Eastern Orthodox monk who belonged to a reputable order, so he probably didn't spend his time getting shitfaced. I don't think there's any evidence he was crazy either.

-I've never read anything about Jacob Lawrence being an abuser of acohol or other drugs.

- JS Bach (?)

-Duke Ellington

Anyway, to my knowledge they were all clean enough (I don't know much about Bach so I stuck the question mark next to his name) and I'd consider all of them to be creative geniuses. I'm sure there're plenty more.

Btw, Hendrix may well belong in the pantheon of eternal geniuses (time will tell, but we'll be dead by then). It's no joke when it's said he permanently and significantly changed the way guitar was played and how people thought the guitar could/should sound...and guitar may well continue on as one of the most important instruments for a long time to come.
