Default "Bull Durham" commeration cancelled because of stars' anti-war stance

Story here.

Sya, I heard that some Americans think this current war is a bad idea...gasp! How many American soldiers did I just kill!

This attitude of "Well, if you don't see things as I do, you are wrong and you and your work will be shunned" is frightening to me. What do people want? No examination of issues? A blind homogeneity of expressed opinion? A facade on which to base policy in place of actual evidence?

This is a rant not just in response to the article cited but to other stories heard and read over the past couple weeks.

Talking

Bah. I don't read everything. If I see the other mods at work I just mod the threads that are more recent than the ones they've been active in. Well, unless we're talking Sakpo...I wouldn't trust that guy to moderate the local hospital's Comatose Patients' Spring Mixer. Besides, I'm prety sure I was exclusively in Iraq at that point, or so I'm going to maintain.

You know, when you think about it, why would they even want to have a celebration for "Bull Durham"? Wasn't there a lot of naughty, unmarried sex happening in that movie? (I mean, if we're going to be conservative and all. .)

I heard about this on Sports Radio. That the commissioner (?) of the Hall of Fame said that (and I'm obviously paraphrasing) that the actions taken by Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon are putting our troops in danger.

Yeah, what's worse? Some Hollywood celebrity (American Citizen) protesting a military action (not the troops) or Saddam's Secret Police. Or suicide bombers for that matter.

Which do you think the soldiers are more worried about?

Exactly the radio host's point. And I would agree. What danger are the "Hollywood Protesters" putting the troops in?

This goes back to Vietnam. Everyone is paranoid that protesting the war now is like protesting Vietnam and that's just not the case. As soon as soldiers start coming home being labelled as babykillers, then maybe I'll agree. But I haven't seen anyone who hasn't publicly denounced the troops.

If anything, protesting military action could be considered the biggest support of our troops. What could be safer than not putting them in harms way?

Oh well. So someone who takes a political stance suffers backlash. What's so new about this? MLB doesn't have to let Robbins speak about anything. At this time, maybe they don't want to take the risk of him going off on a political rant.

Charleton Heston chose to take the position of President of the NRA a few years back and the man's been excoriated time after time by his colleagues in show business. According to Heston, his strong 2nd Amendment stance has cost him acting roles on several occasions and he's even been the face of gun evil in Michael Moore's "Bowling for Columbine". Heston has suffered the backlash of a strong opinion. Is that unfair? Or does he "just have it coming to him" by those whose opinions differ from his?

Tim Robbins? Being treated unfairly? Tough shit.

I heard his speech yesterday on the way home from work and at times he sounded like a spoiled child. He can say whatever he wants to say but that doesn't mean that anyone is obliged to agree with or admire him for it.
