I wrote a little bit on this here. The reference in Charlesworth is well worth getting a hold of if you are interested in crucifixion reconstructions.

I am very much interested in forensic archaeology. Without wanting to hijack the thread, apart from crucifixion, another fascinating topic of this kind, is sacrifices...

I did a search and sure enough, you are correct that there were indeed a number of Jews actually crucified by their own, but it appears that it was a punishment copied from other cultures; it was not the "normal" way that the Jews inflicted Capital Punishment which was usually either by stoning or decapitation. I could not find anything that suggested that the Romans took the Jew's "privilege" of imposing capital punishment, but will continue to look at that. Thanks for the other correction.
