Maybe because it is nearly impossible to get a word in edgewise? I know someone who really only carries on what could be called conversation through email--otherwise, it is a monologue that can seriously last for hours.
What's more irritating is that the moment you butt in and say something that is related, it is like they shut down and go "mmhmm.". This drives me insane (partially because I want to talk too, and at length as well!). --tibac |

I actually respect a person who possess opinions on many subjects. At least it denotes they keep abreast of life and like to stimulate themselves intellectually.
Though I do agree that self-righteous people are annoying. |

Between dick-waving contests between wanna-be alpha males of CHIMP WORLD, and overbearing self righteous Christians, the rest of us can't get much of a word in!!
The only way I know to deal with both groups is to WALK OFF. |

BTW, the person who springs to mind is neither a man or an evangelical Christian. Most people with this tendency that I know are not men. --tibac |

My dad was like that. Now though, I argue with him and often times silence him.
My impression is that most people like to be led and when they see someone with forceful speech and body language that's talking about matters intellectual they will often just listen and take it in as gospel. If the person in question is genuinely uninformed it can only take a pointed question or two to silence them. If they get pissed off about then it makes them look boorish anyway. |

Sometimes the loudmouths are also physically intimidating.
Or worse, drunk. I second those who suggested walking away as the best way to deal with these foul beasts. Soy |

On the other hand, people who are listening may *not* be taking it in as gospel, but due to social circumstances cannot get up and walk away from the situation or appear extremely bored. There's really no point in talking back to such people, as they don't tend to listen--so sometimes it is easier to sit and think about what you are going to make for dinner and wonder if the cat has thrown up again back home.

lol about the cats. Fabulous, really, the noises she makes.
Our other cat is a normal, evil feline. --tibac |
