I wish I could find Dawkins' response to a similar argument. Something along the lines of "I would rather be the cousin of the noble ape that rescued its young from hyenas, than be in anyway related to the monsters of the Bible."

Submissions welcome.

A few of my favorites:

"If fifty million people believe a foolish thing, it is still a foolish thing." - Anatole France

"The law, in all its majestic equality, forbids the rich, as well as the poor, to sleep under the bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread." - Anatole France

"Give a man a fish and he'll ask for tartar sauce. Teach a man to fish and he'll leave work early every Friday." - Anon

Thanks for all the pithy quotes!

Cool

Ender,

This is just a side question for the sake of my own curiosity.

Do you have a source for this Luther quote?

“Who loves not women, wine, and song. Remains a fool his whole life long.”

I always thought it was funny and one of my Lutheran friends first introduced me to it. But, I am skeptical of its veracity given that it rhymes in English even though Martin spoke German. It would be interesting to see if it really is attributable to him.

God Bless,
Kenny

It rhymes in German also: "Wer nicht liebt Wein, Weib and Gesang, der bleibet ein Narr sein Leben lang."

However, I've heard this particular bon mot attributed both to Luther and the 19th century poet Johann Heinrich Voss.
